RSI Software
At HI-COM, we use Zoom as our main RSI software. By using the most widely adopted teleconferencing software worldwide, we can set up RSI logistics without the need for onboarding new software for most clients.
Zoom offers simultaneous interpreting audio channels, accessible to all attendees. This is enabled by signing into the Zoom web portal and enabling the Language Interpreting option in the InMeeting (Advanced) tab. For this functionality, Zoom presents a variety of major languages as default options, but users can also create their own if the target language isn’t available.
Once this is set up, interpreters are able to enter Zoom as an interpreter and begin interpreting into their respective audio channels. Attendees can easily choose their desired language channel from their own Zoom client.
Deployment
For most RSI deployments, HI-COM provides a minimum of two interpreters for each language pair and will provide more interpreters if talks are to last longer than 30 minutes. Preventing interpreter fatigue is imperative in ensuring interpreting quality, as simultaneous interpreting is well documented to be extremely mentally taxing.
Fast and consistent network speed is vital for any RSI deployment. HI-COM will be responsible in ensuring interpreters have access to high-speed internet to prevent connection issues.
Prior to the webinar or event, HI-COM will setup a Zoom room with simultaneous interpreting enabled. Interpreters will enter this room as interpreters, with clients deciding on whether they would like the interpreter’s video to be enabled.
When the client enters the Zoom room, they will have the option of picking the audio channel of their preferred language. As Zoom is optimized for real-time teleconferencing, there will be minimal audio lag between the speaker and the interpreting. On Zoom, each interpreter audio channel will play back the original speaker’s audio at 20% volume and the interpreted audio at 80% volume.
While the above is the deployment for webinars, HI-COM’s RSI system for live events involves an additional layer of hardware and support. HI-COM provides a full suite of on-site equipment and technical support, including headsets, microphones, receivers, and any other custom needs required by the venue/client. Using the same software system as for webinars, HI-COM’s RSI setup for live events provides organizers cost savings, as full interpreter booths are no longer necessary, and access to a wider range of available interpreters.
