Quick Answer

HI-COM delivers remote and hybrid simultaneous interpreting for webinars and events connected to China using Zoom’s built-in interpretation feature — the platform used in HI-COM’s own documented projects. A fully remote deployment needs only a stable connection and the interpreters; a hybrid deployment keeps on-site equipment and in-person attendees at the venue while interpreters join remotely. HI-COM has delivered both formats for real clients including the French Chamber of Commerce (CCIF) in Guangzhou and VDMA’s German Mechanical Engineering Association summit in Shanghai.

NO VENUE REQUIRED

Remote & Hybrid Interpreting — Explained

Remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI) lets a professional interpreter join a webinar or event from anywhere and interpret in real time — without traveling to the venue. Attendees choose their preferred language channel and hear the interpretation live — typically with the original speaker’s audio underneath at a lower volume.

Some events combine both formats. A hybrid deployment keeps on-site equipment and in-person attendees at the venue while interpreters join remotely — removing the need for a full interpreter booth without losing the in-room experience.

CHOOSE YOUR DEPLOYMENT

Fully Remote · Hybrid or On-Site?

The right format depends on the venue · the audience and how much is at stake. HI-COM configures each deployment around the event rather than a fixed template.

Fully Remote

Every attendee and interpreter joins online — no physical venue required.

  • No equipment installation or interpreter booth needed
  • Interpreters can join from anywhere in the world
  • Best for webinars · online panels and cross-border calls
  • A minimum of two interpreters per language pair for sessions over 30 minutes

Hybrid (On-Site + Remote)

In-person attendees stay at the venue — interpreters join remotely.

  • Removes the need for a full interpreter booth on-site
  • HI-COM still provides on-site equipment for in-room attendees
  • Widens the pool of available interpreters beyond the venue’s city
  • Same real-time channel switching for in-room and remote attendees

On-Site Simultaneous Interpreting

Interpreters and booth on location for the full event.

  • Keeps interpreters physically present for high-stakes sessions
  • Best for negotiations · legal or diplomatic exchanges
  • No dependency on any single location’s internet connection

HOW IT WORKS

Interpreters — With a Managed Connection

RSI depends on stable audio · prepared terminology and live supervision — not just the software itself. HI-COM manages all three across every stage of the event.

Before the Event

Agenda · language directions and a glossary are reviewed and loaded — and the language-interpretation channels are configured in advance on the chosen platform.

During the Event

A minimum of two interpreters work each language pair — more for sessions over 30 minutes — and HI-COM is responsible for the interpreters’ high-speed internet connection throughout.

After the Event

HI-COM can also support follow-up needs — recordings · transcripts or certified Chinese translation for official documents.

AN HONEST COMPARISON

Where Remote Interpreting Excels — and When On-Site Still Matters

Where Remote & Hybrid Excel

  • No travel cost or time for interpreters — a wider talent pool for rare language pairs
  • Fast to set up for webinars and online panels
  • Works naturally for cross-border and multi-city audiences
  • Cost savings versus a full interpreter booth for hybrid events

When On-Site Still Matters

  • Depends entirely on stable · high-speed internet at every location
  • An interpreter on-site can read the room in ways a remote feed cannot
  • Best suited to structured agendas prepared in advance
  • High-stakes negotiations or sensitive diplomatic sessions often still call for on-site interpreters

See On-Site Simultaneous Interpreting

HI-COM’s interpreting workflow is guided by internationally recognized industry benchmarks — including ISO 23155:2022 (general requirements and recommendations for interpreting services) and ISO 20109:2025 (requirements for simultaneous interpreting equipment). They inform how HI-COM prepares terminology · tests connections and briefs interpreters before an event.

Referenced here as industry benchmarks for good practice — not a claim of formal certification against these standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI)?

RSI lets a professional interpreter join a webinar or event from anywhere and interpret in real time — without traveling to the venue. Attendees choose their preferred language channel and hear the interpretation live.

What platform does HI-COM use for RSI?

HI-COM’s documented remote interpreting projects have used Zoom’s built-in interpretation feature — a dedicated audio channel per language alongside the original speaker’s audio. Contact the team if your event runs on a different platform.

What is a hybrid interpreting deployment?

A hybrid deployment keeps in-person attendees and on-site equipment at the venue while interpreters join remotely — removing the need for a full interpreter booth without losing the in-room experience.

How many interpreters does a remote or hybrid event need?

HI-COM provides a minimum of two interpreters per language pair and adds more when a session runs longer than 30 minutes — simultaneous interpreting is mentally demanding and interpreter fatigue directly affects quality.

Does remote interpreting work for events outside China?

Yes. Interpreters join online rather than traveling to a venue — so RSI has no geographic constraint. HI-COM has delivered remote interpreting for cross-border webinars connecting China with international panelists and audiences.

Is remote interpreting suitable for high-stakes or diplomatic events?

It can be for structured · well-prepared sessions. For sensitive negotiations or diplomatic exchanges many clients still prefer on-site simultaneous interpreting — see the comparison above for where each format fits best.

Does HI-COM offer remote interpreting in languages other than French or English?

Yes. HI-COM’s documented remote and hybrid projects include French-Chinese and English-Chinese interpreting — the same network covers 40+ languages in total depending on the client’s speakers and audience.
