ISO 17100 certifiedHI-COM translation services**Machine translation plus post-editing is outside ISO 17100’s scope. MTPE is assessed separately; no ISO 18587 certification is claimed.
What is MTPE?
Machine translation post-editing is human revision of machine-generated translation against the original. The brief defines the level of correction, terminology work and refinement needed for your audience.
Light vs full post-editing.
Agree the review level before the job starts. Neither level turns a working translation into an officially certified document.
For internal working content
Light post-editing
For suitable internal or working material where the reader needs reliable meaning rather than polished copy.
- Correct meaning-changing errors, omissions and additions.
- Address terminology that prevents understanding.
- Leave non-essential stylistic improvements outside scope.
For content with a wider audience
Full post-editing
For suitable external content requiring a more complete language review, with subject and publication requirements defined first.
- Correct meaning, terminology, grammar and consistency.
- Refine style, tone and readability for the brief.
- Check the agreed formatting and release criteria.
Our full post-editing terminology is aligned with ISO 18587 definitions. ISO 18587:2017 addresses full human post-editing and post-editor competence; the light tier is a limited service brief. HI-COM does not claim ISO 18587 certification. See the ISO scope →
What we translate with AI + human post-editing.
A representative sample helps us decide which parts suit machine translation services and which need a different route.
Technical manuals at scale
Repeated product descriptions and documentation can be assessed for MTPE. Safety-critical instructions require specialist review and explicit validation, not a light tier by default.
Technical translation →Internal documents and knowledge bases
Working reports, support articles and training content. Identify sensitive material and the reader’s need before choosing light or full review.
Translation services →Tender and supplier files
Assess background documents separately from contractual commitments, submission rules and high-stakes answers. The deadline alone does not make MTPE appropriate.
Legal and business translation →Websites and product catalogues
Selected page text, product attributes and structured descriptions, with full post-editing and in-context checks scoped for external use.
Website localisation →Chinese product listings for Thai or Vietnamese readers.
For a cross-border catalogue, share product names, variants, units and approved claims alongside the source. Chinese-to-Thai or Chinese-to-Vietnamese MTPE is assessed for engine output and editor availability before acceptance; marketplace rules and product checks need their own scope.
How it works.
From your source file to a reviewed deliverable.
Five stages, with the review depth and responsibilities agreed before processing.
Assess files & glossary
Review source quality, volume, terminology, data restrictions and intended use. Agree the engine and scope.
Prepare the AI draft
Use the agreed processing arrangement and prepare the machine output for review.
Post-edit
A suitable linguist compares output with the source at the agreed light or full level.
Check quality
Check agreed terminology, numbers, omissions and formatting; raise unresolved source queries.
Deliver & follow up
Provide the agreed files and a route for questions, corrections and future updates.
AI translation, MTPE or human translation: which do you need?
Volume and urgency matter, but the consequences of an error matter too. We assess the source, intended reader and available review time before recommending a route.
| Decision | Raw AI output | AI + human post-editing | Human translation / official route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Human checking | None built into the output. | Source-to-target checking at the agreed level. | Human translation and the defined revision stages. Official requirements assessed separately. |
| Speed | Rapid draft, not a reviewed deliverable. | Can accelerate suitable content; editing and QA still take time. | Schedule reflects translation, revision and any formalities. |
| Cost | Tool charges exclude professional review. | May reduce effort when machine output is usable. | Quoted for specialist work, adaptation and required formalities. |
| Typical fit | Low-risk, indicative understanding. | Working documents or selected external content after assessment. | Nuanced, high-risk, creative or official-document projects. |
| Data | Depends on tool terms and deployment. | Engine, locations, access and retention agreed before processing. | Confidentiality and sharing arrangements also required. |
Chinese and multilingual content.
A China-based language team for international projects.
Chinese–English, Chinese–French and Chinese–Russian projects can be assessed in either direction. Specify Simplified or Traditional Chinese, the target region and your glossary.
HI-COM’s wider offer covers 40+ languages. MTPE suitability, language direction and specialist resources are confirmed for each brief; the whole language list is not an automatic MTPE availability guarantee.
How fast, and how much?
A fast draft only helps if the human work still fits the deadline.
Usable machine output and repeated content can reduce effort compared with translating everything from scratch. Poor output, unclear source text or a demanding style may remove that advantage. We confirm the route and delivery plan after assessment.
Data security & PIPL: agree the workflow first.
A human reviewer does not determine where an AI engine processes data. Begin with the document category and restrictions, before sharing personal, confidential or unpublished information.
- Processing locations
Identify engine providers, hosting and storage locations, and any overseas access relevant to the project.
- Access and retention
Agree authorised people, subprocessors, retention periods and deletion arrangements.
- Training and reuse
Confirm whether content may be used to train or improve models. Record restrictions and contractual arrangements.
- Transfer requirements
Where personal information is involved, assess the applicable PIPL obligations and cross-border rules with your legal or privacy team.
Chinese cross-border requirements depend on the data, processing and applicable conditions or exemptions. A China-based team does not automatically establish compliance. See the PIPL text and CAC guidance on cross-border provisions. This is project-planning information, not a legal determination.
Right fit — or certified / sworn translation instead?
Confirm the route before the deadline becomes the deciding factor.
MTPE can suit large documents, internal working material and selected external content with full review. It is not a substitute for certification, specialist validation or creative adaptation.
Does an institution need to accept the document?
If a court, government body, university, bank or another recipient requires certified or sworn translation, tell us at the start. Its requirements determine the appropriate service, regardless of volume or urgency.

What is MTPE?
MTPE means machine translation post-editing: a human linguist revises machine-generated translation against the original. HI-COM scopes light or full post-editing according to the audience, content and agreed quality requirements.
What is the difference between light and full post-editing?
Light post-editing concentrates on usable meaning and necessary corrections within a limited brief. Full post-editing also addresses terminology, grammar, style, tone and consistency for the agreed audience. Neither automatically includes official certification or subject-matter approval.
How fast is MTPE compared with human translation?
It can be faster where the source and machine output are suitable. Total delivery still includes preparation, editing, quality checks and queries. Share the volume and exact deadline, including the time zone; the delivery plan is confirmed after assessment.
How much does AI translation with human post-editing cost?
The quote depends on the language pair, volume, subject, machine-output quality, review level and delivery requirements. Formatting and urgent scheduling may change the scope. We provide a project quote rather than a fixed percentage saving or universal cost per word.
Is AI translation with human post-editing the same as certified translation?
No. Certification and sworn-translation requirements are determined by the receiving body. This MTPE service does not replace the certified or sworn route needed for an official submission.
Can I switch to certified translation if my recipient requires it?
Tell us as soon as the requirement is known and provide the recipient’s instructions. We assess the correct service, scope and timeline. An existing MTPE file is not automatically eligible for certification.
Is my document data safe when translated using AI?
Data handling depends on the actual engine, deployment and contractual settings. Agree processing locations, access, retention and model-training restrictions before sharing sensitive content. Human review alone does not establish security or compliance.
Can using an AI translation tool be a cross-border transfer under PIPL?
It can involve a cross-border provision of personal information depending on where information is processed or accessed. Applicable requirements and exemptions depend on the facts. Discuss the data flow with your privacy or legal team before processing.
What should I ask a translation vendor about data?
Ask where content is processed and stored, who can access it, how long it is retained, whether it can train models, and which contractual controls apply. Request answers for the proposed workflow, rather than relying on the location of the project manager.
Is AI translation accurate for Chinese?
Accuracy varies with language direction, subject, source quality and engine. Fluent Chinese can still contain omissions, wrong numbers or unsuitable terminology. A representative sample and source-based human review help define whether MTPE is appropriate; no universal accuracy percentage is promised.
Which AI engines do you use?
The engine and deployment are confirmed during project scoping according to language performance, file requirements and data restrictions. We do not assume a named public tool is appropriate for every document. Tell us if your organisation requires or prohibits a particular provider.
Can you post-edit a machine translation I already have?
Yes, submit a project description and provide both the original and machine translation through the agreed channel. Include the engine if known, glossary and intended use. We assess whether editing is viable or a fresh translation would be more suitable.
Is HI-COM ISO 18587 certified?
No ISO 18587 certification is claimed on this page. Our full post-editing terminology is aligned with ISO 18587 definitions. HI-COM’s ISO 17100 certification relates to its translation services; machine translation plus post-editing is outside that standard’s scope.
