HI-COM provides professional interpreting services (simultaneous interpreting, consecutive interpreting etc.) in more than 70 languages. We believe that in our globalized and interconnected world, interpreters hold the keys to effective cross-cultural communication.  Interpreting, also known as interpretation, spoken translation or oral translation, is the practice of conveying a message from one language to another language, retaining as much of the core intention of the speaker as possible. Specialists in multicultural communication solutions, HI-COM is a well-known and trusted partner to hundreds of enterprises, companies and agencies around the world.

Effective interpretation goes beyond language fluency, and is about understanding cultural nuances, speaking idiomatically and being experienced in the field in which you are translating, be it in legal, medical, or other technical industries. HI-COM provides reliable and cost-effective Interpreting services, with our network of highly skilled, qualified and experienced multi-linguists.

Consecutive Interpreting

Consecutive Interpreting is the other main mode of interpreting, where the interpreter waits for the speaker to finish a sentence or idea before interpreting to the audience or individual. We support our clients in more than 70 languages, providing professional meeting interpreting, exhibition interpreting, face-to-face negotiations, product launches and any other types of events where consecutive interpreting is appropriate. We work with professional, trained and highly experienced interpreters and leaders in their fields.

Simultaneous Interpreting

SI or Simultaneous Interpreting is where the interpreter listens to the speaker and delivers the translation in real time – at the same rate of delivery as the speaker – to the audience. It is a mode of interpretation commonly deployed at conferences, seminars or forums where the interpreters will typically be situated in a discreet booth, wearing microphones and headsets, with a direct link to the speaker’s microphone, and a link to the headsets worn by the audience to receive the translation in real-time. Most commonly used where more than two languages are involved in the communication, SI is one of the key services HI-COM provides. With a decade of experience, our team is trained to support and succeed at events of all difficulty levels.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is consecutive interpreting used?

Consecutive interpreting is generally used in meetings, public hearings, medical appointments or staff training sessions. It is essential to use competent and experienced interpreters who are able to retain key points and convey a speech or message in the target languages, which can sometimes last up to 5 minutes

When is simultaneous interpretation used?

Simultaneous interpreting is usually used at conferences, seminars or large corporate meetings. With a strong experience in this field, HI-COM can provide you with state-of-the-art equipment and experienced and highly qualified interpreters for your corporate events, whether they are large or small.

What are the differences between simultaneous and consecutive interpreting?

How to choose between simultaneous and consecutive interpreting? Are you organizing a conference and would like an interpreter to translate a speech?

THE 5 MAIN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SIMULTANEOUS AND CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETING

1) Simultaneous Interpreting: In simultaneous interpreting, the time available to correctly render and structure the speech in the target language is extremely limited, if not non-existent, due to the fact that the translation is continuous.
Consecutive interpreting: In consecutive interpreting, on the other hand, the interpreter has more time at his disposal. This allows the interpreter to detach himself from the source speech and to more easily avoid literal translations and undesirable interferences.

2) Simultaneous interpreting: It requires the use of an interpreting booth and a translation case, as well as headphones. The interpreting booth is soundproof and separate from the other interpreters.
Consecutive interpreting: The interpreter does not need any translation equipment.

3) Simultaneous interpreting: Simultaneous interpreters require extensive training to master the ability to hear and instantly translate into another language what is being said.
Consecutive interpreting: In this type of interpreting, interpreters are required to have an excellent memory and master note-taking skills in order to render a quality interpreting.

4) Simultaneous Interpreting: Before the event, the simultaneous interpreter receives information about the event, in order to assimilate the context and to have the maximum amount of information necessary to provide an interpreting that is consistent with what is being said.
Consecutive interpreting: Unlike simultaneous interpreting, the consecutive interpreter does not receive information beforehand.

5) Simultaneous Interpreting: The advantage of simultaneous interpreting is that there is a fluidity of communication because there is no break in what is being said and the speech, so you can follow a presentation at the same time as the interpreting is done.
Consecutive interpreting: The disadvantage is that the interpreting is more jerky than simultaneous interpreting. However, the advantage is that there is better control over the interpreter's speech, which is therefore more thoughtful with more hindsight than with simultaneous interpreting.
