Customer need
Textron Group called up HI-COM to translate aircraft manuals and promotional materials for the Global Business Aviation Exhibition, requiring translations with both professional depth and elegant style, accurately matching the aesthetics and reading tastes of high-net-worth individuals.
HI-COM’s Approach
1.Project Analysis and Preparation Phase
- In-depth Analysis of Requirements
Clearly define the types of translation materials (aircraft manuals/promotional materials), target audience (high-net-worth individuals), and usage scenarios (global business aviation exhibition).
Analyze the technical difficulty and stylistic characteristics of the original text, such as the engineering terminology in the Cessna Citation manuals versus the marketing tone of the Beechcraft King Air promotional copy.
Setup of a dedicated team:
Experienced translators: Specializing in aviation, with an aviation engineering background and knowledge of standard terminology in aviation, avionics, and related fields;
High-end Copywriters: Proficient in the language style of luxury goods/business fields, able to accurately convey “high-end imagery”;
Review Experts: Technical and business representatives from Textron’s Shanghai office participate in terminology and writing style confirmation.
- Terminology and Style Standardization
Creation of a bilingual terminology database: Integrate proprietary terms from Textron’s brands (Cessna, etc.), such as uniformly translating “FAST BOX RECORDER” as “快速电子记录仪”;
Develop a style guide: Stipulate that the writing should avoid colloquialisms, using “瞩目问世” (Notable Launch) instead of “上市” (launch), and incorporate brand keywords such as “business jet” and “jet aircraft.”
2.Translation Execution and Quality Control
- Phased Translation Strategy
Promotional Materials: Focus on cultural adaptation, for example, translating the English “luxury travel” as “尊享航程”, aligning with the “cultural asset” consumption mentality of high-net-worth individuals.
- Multi-Round Review Mechanism
Technical Review: Aviation engineers verify the accuracy of parameters (such as cruising altitude and fuel efficiency);
Language Polishing: Native Chinese business copywriters optimize sentence structure, such as converting passive voice to active voice to improve fluency;
Brand Consistency Check: Ensure the translation reflects Textron’s consistent terminology and writing style characteristics.
3. Delivery and Feedback Optimization
- Format and Visual Presentation
Retain the original layout design, and use Source Han Sans CN font for Chinese characters (commonly used in high-end business scenarios);
For parameter units, maintain the use of metric units. For example, if feet are used in English, we will convert them to metric units during translation.
- Closed-Loop Customer Feedback
Provide a glossary and translation instructions, explaining special handling (such as cultural image conversion);
Iterate the terminology database based on feedback from Textron’s marketing department, such as adding “unimproved runway” as “未经改造的跑道” (unmodified runway).
Result
Millions of words of translated data, with a high-end and sophisticated writing style. Our translations frequently appear in high-end business aviation exhibitions and business events.
